AI Voice Scams Are Targeting Canadians Why Cyber Vigilance Can’t Wait

ree

The emergence of artificial intelligence has opened the door to innovation across industries, but it has also given cybercriminals a new arsenal of tools. In the latest wave of fraudulent activity, Canadian authorities are warning of a disturbing trend: the use of AI-generated voice messages to impersonate senior officials and public figures as part of highly deceptive scams.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), alongside the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), is sounding the alarm on a spike in these sophisticated fraud attempts. In several reported incidents, threat actors are leveraging artificial intelligence to clone the voices of prominent figures sometimes government officials, other times corporate executives and using them to call unsuspecting individuals with urgent financial requests or malicious links. These messages are often delivered via text and messaging platforms, further complicating their detection.

This kind of AI-driven impersonation marks a concerning escalation in the realm of cybercrime. No longer are scams limited to poorly written emails or questionable pop-ups. Today, a scam may sound exactly like your CEO or a high-ranking government official. And for businesses, especially those handling sensitive financial or operational data, the stakes are alarmingly high.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, in collaboration with international partners such as the FBI, has been monitoring these developments for months. Their findings indicate that artificial intelligence is now significantly enhancing the success rate of social engineering attacks globally. In April 2025, the FBI formally warned the public of similar threats proving this is not just a national issue, but a global one.

The urgency to act has never been more pressing. Organizations must consider how exposed their people and systems are to socially engineered attacks like these. Proper verification processes, employee training, and multilayered cybersecurity strategies are no longer optional they are essential.
