Billions of Cyber Threats Blocked: Why Organizations Cannot Afford to Ignore Cybersecurity Anymore

As cyber threats continue to grow in both volume and sophistication, the latest figures from the PLDT Group serve as a powerful reminder of just how active and relentless today’s digital threat landscape has become. During the first quarter of the year alone, the company reported blocking 49 billion access attempts to malicious domains, preventing 1.4 billion cyberattacks and data breaches, and stopping more than 208,000 attempts to access content related to Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC).

These numbers are staggering, but perhaps even more important is what they reveal about the current state of cybersecurity. Cybercriminals are no longer targeting only large enterprises or government agencies. Every connected device, online service, business application, and digital platform has become a potential target.

As more Filipinos rely on digital services for communication, banking, education, shopping, and work, cybersecurity has evolved from being an IT concern into a critical business and societal issue. Organizations now face a constant battle against phishing attacks, ransomware, identity theft, data breaches, misinformation campaigns, and increasingly sophisticated threats powered by artificial intelligence.

PLDT’s efforts highlight how cybersecurity is becoming deeply embedded into the infrastructure that supports everyday digital life. According to the company, security-by-design principles and responsible AI initiatives are helping strengthen defenses across their networks while ensuring safer online experiences for users.

The issue extends beyond traditional cybercrime. One of the most alarming concerns remains the growing prevalence of online child exploitation. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) received more than 20 million reports globally in 2024 involving online child sexual abuse and exploitation imagery, with approximately 1.7 million reports involving Filipino children. These figures demonstrate why cybersecurity is not only about protecting systems and data but also about safeguarding vulnerable individuals and communities.

At the same time, lawmakers and advocacy groups continue pushing for stronger protections against emerging threats, particularly as artificial intelligence introduces new risks. AI-generated harmful content, advanced social engineering tactics, and automated cyberattacks are becoming increasingly common, requiring organizations to rethink how they approach security.

Education and awareness are also becoming essential components of cyber resilience. PLDT’s Online Alerto initiatives and cybersecurity awareness programs for students reflect an important reality: technology alone cannot solve cybersecurity challenges. Individuals must also understand how to recognize scams, avoid phishing attempts, protect personal information, and practice responsible online behavior.

For businesses, the message is equally clear. The volume of attacks being blocked every day demonstrates that threats are not slowing down. Organizations that rely solely on basic security measures may find themselves struggling to keep pace with attackers who are continuously evolving their techniques.

This is why many organizations are now investing in proactive cybersecurity strategies that focus on prevention, visibility, monitoring, and rapid response. Managed security providers such as Directpath Global Technologies (DGT) help organizations strengthen their cyber defenses through solutions including Managed Threat Detection (MTD), Extended Detection and Response (XDR), Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT), Vulnerability Risk Management as a Service (VRMaaS), Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW), Web Application Firewalls (WAF), virtual Chief Information Security Officer (vCISO) services, SOC 2 readiness support, and Operational Technology (OT) Security. DGT’s Artificial Intelligence Division also works with organizations to develop tailored solutions that support both cybersecurity and broader operational objectives.

The latest cybersecurity statistics from PLDT highlight a simple but urgent reality: threats are happening at a scale that most organizations never see because security systems stop them before they cause harm. However, not every attack is blocked, and not every organization is equally prepared. As digital transformation continues to accelerate across the Philippines, strengthening cybersecurity is no longer optional—it is a fundamental requirement for maintaining trust, protecting data, and ensuring long-term business resilience.
